The Unsolved Challenge: Food Chain

40 % of the food produced in India is wasted!

Despite adequate food production,

the UN has reported that about 190 million Indians remain undernourished

It is further estimated that the value of food wastage in India is around ₹92,000 crores per annum.

Nearly, 21 million tons of wheat is wasted annually that number is equivalent to the gross annual production of Australia.

In other words, this amount is adequate to feed all of Bihar for a year.

300 million barrels (47700 Litres)  of oil are used to produce food that is ultimately wasted

Understanding, Observing and analyzing each and every side of the current ecosystem.

Show a huge blunder and absurd figures which don't even humiliate us to have chalked out a roadmap.

"The belly rules the mind"

These are some bleak statistics, but they should help us realize the magnitude of the problem of food waste, as much as inequity, in India.

Approximately 84.7% of the total food waste recorded was thrown in the bin

While the rest was either fed to the poor or some animals.

Wondering and visualizing this data is insane.

Food wastage in India is happening due to infrastructural, inefficient management, and many more factors.

6 Truths behind the scene:

  1. Lack of storage space: India faces a critical deficiency of cold storage capacity.

    Foodgrain Storage in India

According to 2017 stats, India had 7,645 cold storages having an aggregate holding capacity of 34.95 million tonnes.

Don't get shocked, India's production is 250-300 million tonnes of cereals in 2019-2020

According to Official figures data on actual losses is the first thing we should have and that rounds to 4-6%.

  2. Wastage by consumers: Only 2 of the 10 outlets surveyed were partially waste-conscious.

While the Indian Government had voiced the need for regulation of food wasted at hotels, restaurants, and weddings, in early 2017, it hasn't yet specifically addressed concerns posed by the retail sector.

  3. Lack of refrigerated transport: Temperature maintenance throughout the chain is essential for equilibrium between food quality and effective storage.

    According to Global Agriculture:

It is estimated that the world's 14% of food is lost after harvesting and before reaching the retail level because of the stated sub-heading.

  4. Lack of awareness: According to Wasted Food Supply it is stated the ages 18-24, are more likely to waste food due to a lack of awareness.

Lack of awareness about the effect of food waste is leading young adults.

Teens are usually caught saying parents or grandparents, believes superstitions that you're (guardians) uneducated in an unpleasant mood.

The above survey shows that before judging and believing or underestimating anyone deep dive into our soul!

  5. Stock management inefficiencies: Farmers do not pre-cool after harvest; the ‘cut-to-cool’ time is recognized as being very important for many commodities but is typically not monitored effectively.

The Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP) also has reported that over Rs 1,00,000 crore is lost annually of farm produce.

  6. Inefficient distribution: Reducing food losses and waste is essential in a world where the number of people affected by hunger.

The question arises, How chain of inefficiencies and lacking could be affirmatively converted?

Trend & Solutions:

  • Internet-based data monitoring and communication: Software integration in management and organizing information at different levels.

  • Roadmap: For Cold Storage and Stock management

  • Mindfulness and Self Introspection: This would help as a catalyst.

It has the potential for doing a couple of things which are the need of the hour.

  • Research and quality assurance: FSSAI has set certain guidelines for food safety research. Rules and regulations could be implemented asap.

  • Spreading Awareness: Many Volunteer-based Zero funded organization, works to get surplus food from restaurants, homes, parties, etc to the less fortunate sections of society in cities.

Like Robin Hood Army, Safal, and many more...
