Extended Reality (XR): Immersing Technology

Extended Reality (XR): All immersive technologies extend the reality we experience by either blending the virtual and “real” worlds or by creating a fully immersive experience. XR is the umbrella category that covers all the various forms of computer-altered reality, including Mixed Reality (MR), Virtual Reality (VR), and Augmented Reality (AR). Virtual Reality (VR) It immerses users in a fully artificial digital environment. Virtual reality is the term used to describe a three-dimensional, computer technology to create a simulated vision.  VR places the user inside an experience. Instead of viewing a screen, users are able to interact with the 3D world. Ex: Oculus handsets, Google Cardboard Best Handsets: Oculus, HTC, Google, etc.    Mixed Reality (MR) It not just overlays but anchors virtual objects to the real world.

Mixed reality is the integration of virtual as well as real worlds to produce new surrounding and visualizations, where the physical and digital (virtual) pattern or objects (i.e. AR & VR) co-exist and interact in real-time. Ex: MR overlays images or videos over a screen showing reality through a mobile camera, smart glasses, or headsets. Augmented Reality (AR) It overlays virtual objects on the real-world environment. Augmented reality is a kind of ‘virtual hologram’.  It is a technology that works on computer vision-based recognition algorithms to augment sound, video, graphics, and other sensor-based inputs on real-world objects using the camera of your device. Ex: The Pepper’s ghost technique, which uses a partially reflective surface to mix an image with the scene beyond.
